Sleeping Patterns

As some of those who know me will know, I have what the medical profession would call a "destructive sleep cycle". Half the time it's easier to refer to my sleep pattern in terms of timezones, as in which one I'm currently in sync with, ala this xkcd strip.

Hence, for the first time in about a year really, I am pleased to say, that for the past 5 days, I can happily say "Good Morning. From Scotland."

Propane App Icon

A while ago I did an icon for an application called "Propane". It's a collaboration app that allows you to use "Campfire" (a web-based collaboration tool) from a desktop app with very useful features like drag-and-drop image uploading.
Anyhow, I'm rather proud of it so I thought I'd share it here. It is of course on my portfolio over on www.mathcampbell.co.uk along with some other icons I've been doing. Sadly I can't show all the icons I've made recently since the app's aren't released yet.

Back to work I guess....

Oops

Ooh.  Sorry.
Been busy with Uni that I've now left (to pursue icon work) and icon work.  Got a new site for that...

iPlayer Downloader is still going strong, go check it out...
Still in Greenock...
Still cooking from scratch though...

That's about it really.  I'll try and update this more regularly....

Icon Designs

Sorry for the lack of updates as of late, I've been hectic-busy.

I was in the #macdev chatroom on freenode IRC network, asking questions about how to do some things for iPlayer Downloader (which is coming along OK when I have spare time) when the conversation turned to graphic design and I mentioned that that's my main skill, programming being a side-hobby for me.

Someone then pm-d me asking if I do commissions for icon design!
I do, and after all the work's been done, client's happy with them, and so I thought I'd share them with you, my many, many readers (all 4-5 of you).

I would stop to add that they're done in Modo/Photoshop and took about 3 days on and off. They were done for the upcoming chemical database/calculator/molecular design app, Structural.
In the next few months, in between Uni, iPlayer and various other things, I'm going to set up a website and start tendering my services in this area. It's fun, I think I'm fairly good at it, and it's a nice way of getting some work for my portfolio which as most of you will know is sadly lacking in, well, work.

iPlayer Downloader 2!!

Sorry for the long time since updates, puppy is tiring. This post is mostly about iPlayer Downloader, a Mac app I've co-written for downloading BBC tv programs on a Mac. Feel free to bypass if you're not into that.

So I got an e-mail out of the blue the day before yesterday from a guy named Lawrence Dudley. He's also programmed an application to download programs from the BBC's iPlayer service, on Mac, and had also called it "iPlayer Downloader". Trouble was, he'd used Automator (which is fine for things like this ordinarily) to make it work rather than the laborious full Cocoa-based app I originally did a couple of months back (which for this kinda thing is really a little overkill).
Until that is you want a progress indicator, or want to change the download-to folder, or have it auto-update.

If you remember, I'd stopped work on iPlayer Downloader because the script it was using had stopped working and was a hassle to try and get working again. I'd intended to make it intoa full Ruby-Cocoa bridge, but that's hard and I've had other things to do...
So when Lawrence e-mailed me, he suggested we pool our knowledge and resources and knock out a new version.

To cut my long drivelling post short, I am proud to unveil iPlayer Downloader 2.0 (click to download). Lawrence is a photographer by trade and does a fair amount of website design and hosting, so he's able to host the file, not to mention the project page (which you can find here).

New in this version (thanks to the Sparkle and Growl frameworks) is growl notifications for when your download is finished or fails, a new interface layout that's tidied up a bit, and the biggie, autoupdating! Oh, and the progress indicator is green. Sad, I know, but hey, I like green.

In later versions, we plan to include a WebView page for seeing the program you want without needing a browser, and proxy-support, not to mention multiple downloads.

So, I'd like to thankLawrence for giving me the chance to work with him on this, we make a great team, and to thank everyone who downloaded the first version and everyone who downloads this one, and I wish you all happy TV watching.

Any comments, suggestions and criticisms of the app, please feel free to mail me them or comment here; if it's a genuine complaint or shortfall I will try to address it.

In other news, I start back to Uni in like 3 or 4 days. Not sure when exactly. Hmmm, maybe something to look into there...
Puppy is still mental, and is nicknamed (courtesy of Scott) the Wee Mad Doggie. She's growing a bit now.
Oh, and I made some really nice biscuits the other day. Not cookies, but proper iced crunchy biscuits. They were lovely. Angel thought they were bitter (after all, they were only 60% sugar!). C'ést la vie!

Puppy

So yesterday, we hear a commotion out in the close (tha's the communal landing fer those nae familiar wie the Scots patter).
Turns out one of our neighbours was accosted by one of the lovely residents of Port Glasgow (aka a Junkie) who offered to sell our neighbour a "dug" for £5, cause he needs the money for smack. Lovely.
When the neighbour responded in the normal way one responds to junkies trying to score cash off you ("Get tae fuck"), the junkie dropped the lead of the puppy, kicked the poor wee thing across the street towards the neighbour saying "fuck it, Ah dinnae want the fucking thing anyhoo".
Neighbour, being the dog lover he is, threw a tenner at the junkie, telling to get lost or he's dead.
And then took the dog home. Trouble is they already have a dog and cannot take any more, and so the commotion in the close was them phoning the cat&dog home to have her taken away.

And then we saw her. Angel made a kind of "awww" sound that is impossible to reproduce in writing. I probably did too.

We has a puppy.

She has a stick. But no name yet, so answers on the back of a postcard.

UPDATE:
After much humming and hawing (hope that's the right word) and several different approaches, myself and the missus have decided upon "Freyja" for the wee thing's name. For those of you who have not been keeping up on your Norse mythology, the wiki page is most informative.

New Header piccy

As the more observant of you will have already noticed, I did a new image for my blog.

I'd wanted one when I first started the blog, but never got around to it, so now I did. Simple, but I think it's pretty. If I could figure out how, I'd upload the entire thing as my header image, since it's actually an animated video. But sadly, the net isn't quite that good yet. I 'spose I could do it in flash, but blogger doesnae like flash that much, and to be quite honest, neither do I.

Still, tis a shame I can't have a video-based title; I did the picture in AfterEffects, which I'm using a lot more now...

The binary numbers all zoom around and stuff, and the magicy thing flys past the camera, all very pretty.

Yes. I am sad. I know.
